LEXINGTON, Ky. - Freshman Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) scored the single Marshall (1-5-0) goal against Kentucky (4-0-3) tonight in the 3-1 loss at the UK Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.
Scoring started early in the match when Wildcat Courtney McCrudden carried the ball down the field to score in the eighth minute of play. Scoring a little over 15 minutes later Kristin Moyer was able to get her head on a corner kick taken by McCrudden to make the score 2-0.
Johnson stepped up for the Thundering Herd in the 35th minute of play. Kentucky turned the ball over on a penalty and Johnson took a restart for Marshall 30 yards from the Wildcat goal. Johnson put the ball on goal and Wildcat goalkeeper Anne Ogundele could not make the save. The goal is Johnson's first of her career at Marshall.
Entering the second half, the Herd had been out-shot nine to one and gave up six corner kicks to the Wildcats, who did not give any up. Goalkeeper Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn./ Burnsville) made three saves in the first half.
Wildcat Kristin Kover placed a shot on goal and Nordness made the save, but the ball remained in play. Kentucky forward Kelsey Fenix found the rebounded ball to score the third Wildcat goal of the match.
The Herd was unable to even the score before the final whistle blew. Overall Marshall was out-shot 25-3, gave up 11 corner kicks and made nine saves. The Wildcats did not allow one Marshall corner kick and made two saves.
