Marshall Thundering Herd head softball coach Shonda Stanton announced the hiring of assistant coach Shane Winkler and graduate assistant coach Nicole Brock on Thursday.
"It's exciting to have our staff finally set in place," Stanton said. "Shane and Nicole will both add new perspectives and the girls will be well trained with our quality coaching staff.
"They both complement our staff very well and bring a lot of energy. We are looking forward to a very exciting season."
Prior to joining the Marshall coaching staff, Winkler was the co-head softball coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Ill., where he was the hitting coach and worked with the defense. He also made the schedules and managed practices, while also assisting in recruiting, fundraising and academics.
For the past two summers, Winkler has been playing minor league baseball in O'Fallon, Mo., for the River City Rascals of the independent Frontier League.
Winkler has also volunteered as hitting coach for the highly successful South Newton Summer Softball Programs since 2000, as well as working with South Newton High School in Kentland, Ind.
Winkler earned his associate's degree in general education from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., in 2002. He then received his bachelor of arts degree in communication studies from Butler University in 2004.
Brock, a 2003 graduate of Morehead State in Morehead, Ky., received her bachelor of science degree in exercise science.
She was a four-year scholarship athlete and maintained a 3.598 grade point average in kinesiotherapy.
Brock was the captain of the Morehead State softball team during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. She batted .333 during her senior season and received Ohio Valley Conference honorable mention honors in 2002 and second team honors in 2003. She was named an NFCA Scholar Athlete in 2001 as well as being named to the NFCA's "Four Hit Club."
She currently ranks fifth in three career categories at Morehead State, while ranking fourth in career home runs.
Last season, Marshall won the Mid-American Conference Championship and earned the top seed in the MAC Tournament. The Herd (38-20) fell short of sweeping both championships, suffering a 5-2 loss to Miami (Ohio) in the championship game.
