Huntington, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball team heads to College Park, Md. this weekend for the Courtyard by Marriott Fort Meade Invitational hosted by the defending Atlantic Coast Conference Champions, the Maryland Terrapins.

The Herd gets things started with a 7 p.m. match against the Terps Friday night and then squares off against UT-Arlington at 1 p.m. Saturday and the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers at 5:30 p.m. to conclude its stay in Maryland Saturday evening.

Marshall is coming off a season-opening loss to the Miami RedHawks on Monday night with its former Mid-American Conference rivals taking all three games in the bout.

"We hope to fair better this weekend than we did at Miami," Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "I think everyone is positive and there's no reason to not be. We want to challenge ourselves with a tough on the road schedule to get ready for Conference USA and that's what we're doing."

The Herd should face a difficult challenge in its first match as it takes on back-to-back ACC Tournament Champs Maryland. The Terps finished the year 18-15 last year after exiting the NCAA Tournament in the second round. This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Terps and the Herd.

Saturday's competition features the Mavericks of UT-Arlington and the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. Marshall has never faced UT-Arlington and is 0-1 all-time against Rutgers. The Mavericks finished last season 24-7 and in third place in the Southland Conference UT-Arlington is 1-1 on the year with a win against Prairie View and a loss to No. 16 ranked Texas A&M. Rutgers was 16-10 last year and 1-2 so far in 2005.

Scoring of all the Herd's matches at the Maryland tournament will be available on Gametracker on www.HerdZone.com.
