Philadelphia, Pa. - Marshall tennis players Shannon Brown and Lynzee Kever are set to represent the Thundering Herd this weekend in individual play at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia.
The Penn Invite features players from several of the East Region's best teams and top programs nationwide. It is an invitation only tournament so it will be a chance for Brown and Kever to showcase and hone their skills against stiff competition.
"This is a great opportunity for these two to pick up some East Region wins to help out their rankings and the team's ranking and continue to keep Marshall tennis in the national spotlight."
Brown is in her sophomore season with the Herd after playing No. 6 singles and three doubles for most of her freshman campaign. The Overland Park, Kan. native really stepped up her game over the summer and has worked hard to emerge as a leader on the Herd this year.
"I'm excited to have a chance to play against some top competition and represent our team well," Brown said. "It should be a good experience and help me improve by seeing where I stack up against some of the players in the tournament."
Joining Brown is the Herd's latest addition to the squad. Kever transferred from the University of Colorado where she played No. 1 for the Buffaloes. Kever was the 2004 ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year and 2004 Big 12 first team in singles. Kever has been ranked as high as No. 67 in the ITA rankings and the Herd is excited to have her on their side of the net.
"We're thrilled to have Lynzee starting her Marshall career," Mercer said. "We're expecting her to have a lot of success for us. I know she's excited to be here and excited to start playing after missing the first weekend due to medical reasons. This tournament also gives her a chance to get back into the swing of things before a big weekend at UK next week."
Kever is also excited about starting her playing career with the Herd.
"I'm really happy to be here and I really like the team and the coaches and I'm looking forward to representing Marshall University well," she said. "Shannon and I are going to compete hard this weekend and try to get as many wins as we can."
Herdzone.com will have results for Brown and Kever updated throughout the weekend.
