HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team dropped its final contest in the season-opening WVU Labor Day Shootout Saturday at Dick Dlesk Stadium, falling 6-1 to Campbell. Both teams finish the tournament with a 1-1 mark.
Marshall's goal came from freshman Jira Cooley (Seattle, Wash./Redmond), but it was not nearly enough to overcome the offensive onslaught of Campbell brothers Willy and Sonny Guadarrama, who combined for five goals and two assists. Older brother Willy netted four goals, while Sonny chipped in with one goal and two assists, both to Willy.
The Camels' victory allowed host West Virginia to take the tournament title. The Mountaineers posted a 2-0 record in the tourney after earning a 2-0 win Saturday vs. Temple, while Marshall and Campbell each notched 1-1 marks. Temple rounded out the field with an 0-2 record.
The Thundering Herd returns to action Thursday in the home opener, as the Pittsburgh Panthers come to Sam Hood Field for a 4 p.m. match.
