DALLAS - The Marshall Thundering Herd volleyball team picked up its third road victory in Conference USA and head coach Mitch Jacobs' 100th Sunday by defeating the SMU Mustangs 3-0 (33-31, 30-26, 30-28).
Jacobs, in his fifth season on the sidelines for the Herd, becomes the fastest coach in school volleyball history to reach the 100 win milestone. The feat took Jacobs 153 matches to reach and former Herd coach Linda Holmes 165. The two are the only coaches in Marshall volleyball history to achieve 100 or more victories.
"Milestone wins me you've been somewhere long enough to win them," Jacobs said. "I was much more worried about defeating SMU than win No. 100."
SMU (10-8, 1-4 C-USA) was unable to shake the Herd (11-8, 3-2 C-USA) defensively. The Mustangs were held to a team .243 hitting percentage. Providing a defensive touch to her 42 assists was setter Christin Bimberg with four blocks. Maggie Arias and Stephanie Cahill provided a steady output of digs with a combined 27.
Jacobs said Cahill's match against SMU was definitely helpful in gaining the victory.
"Steph Cahill had a good match for us tonight," he said. "She was swinging well, she played good defense for us and passed well."
Leading the Herd with 21 kills was Kelly-Anne Billingy. She has 19 or more kills in her past six matches and has been in double digits in 14 of 15 contests. Also in the double figures with 10 kills was Uche Ndubisi who also had two blocks and a team-high hitting percentage of .364.
Jacobs said closing opposing teams out will continue to be important to the Herd's success.
"Our team needs to stay focused and take advantage of some of the things we have going for us," he said.
The Herd will be returning home for a two-match home stand. Marshall's next opponent will be a C-USA match up with Memphis at the Cam Henderson Center on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
