HUNTINGTON- The UCF Golden Knights defeated the Marshall University Thundering Herd women's soccer team 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field. UCF's Courtney Whidden notched two of the four goals in the match.
"Overall, we played hard today. I am appreciative of the effort the team turned in," head coach Chris Kane said. "It was good to see Emma [White] making an impact in the middle of the field. Now we need to be better for Friday night."
The Herd (5-7-1/1-4-0) was able to hold the Golden Knights (9-5-1/5-1-0) off until the 29th minute of play when Roberta Pelargio beat Marshall's aggressive goalkeeper Liz Orton.
Pelargio would assist Whidden on her first goal of the match in the 36th minute of play.
The Herd entered halftime trailing 2-0. Orton made five saves in the half. Marshall tallied three shots to UCF's 12.
Whidden scored the third goal of the match in the 60th minute of play.
The Marshall defense was able to hold the Golden Knights scoreless for the next 13 minutes, but gave up the final goal to Lydia Jones in the 73rd minute.
"UCF is a very good, athletic and well-coached team," Kane said. "We lost to a better team today."
The Golden Knights forced Orton to make nine saves in the match and out-shot the Herd 26-5. Julia Axelsson led the Herd in shots with two.
UCF now leads the all-time series 2-0.
"Athletically and technically we are not there yet. We do need to do things within ourselves to keep in the game," Kane said. "We made a few mistakes, gave up soft goals and deserved to lose 4-0. Now we need to take this, learn and prepare for Friday because it doesn't get easier from here."
Marshall travels to No. 22 SMU on Oct. 20 and then to Tulsa on Oct. 22. The Herd will return to Sam Hood Field during homecoming weekend to face Colorado College on Oct. 27 and UTEP on Oct. 29.
