South Bend, Ind. - The College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana, opened its largest exhibit ever on Tuesday. The "We Are Marshall" exhibit includes authentic items on loan from Marshall University and items from the upcoming Warner Brothers movie "We Are Marshall" that will be on display for the next six months.
The display opened with a special screening of the movie on the 36th anniversary of the tragic 1970 Marshall football plane crash that claimed the lives of all 75 persons on board.
"This screening and exhibit is the perfect avenue for our organization to recognize Marshall University's perseverance through one of the most difficult times in the history of college football," said Steven J. Hatchell, president of The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). "We are pleased Warner Bros. has chosen the College Football Hall of Fame as a venue for this prestigious event."
Included in the display are complete costumes worn by actors McConaughey and Matthew Fox, Marshall uniforms worn during filming, and various props used on the set of the movie. In addition to movie-related items, the exhibit details events surrounding the November 1970 Marshall plane crash and features authentic items from that period. The exhibit also includes many items that chronicle Marshall football's re-birth and championship tradition. These items will be on display until May 15, 2007 and includes several items on loan from Marshall University that have never before been displayed publicly.
Based on true events, "We Are Marshall" stars Matthew McConaughey in the inspiring story of how Marshall University and the small town of Huntington, West Virginia, steeped in the tradition of college football, struggled to restore their community and rebuild the school's football program after the devastating 1970 plane crash that took the lives of nearly the entire Marshall team.
The College Football Hall of Fame's hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $11-$5. For more information, call (574) 235-9999.
