HUNTINGTON - Marshall Thundering Herd sophomore Kellie Schmitt has been ranked the No. 3 player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's East Region as announced by the governing body of collegiate tennis.

Schmitt's No. 3 East Region ranking is the highest ever by any Marshall singles player. Over the course of the fall season Schmitt has defeated eight national ranked singles players and two regionally ranked. Her record for the fall was 17-5 picking up victories at the ITA East Regional, ITA All-American and winning the Wake Forest Fall Invite and also winning the Conference USA Tennis Athlete of the Month for September and October.

Marshall head coach John Mercer said he was incredibly proud of the sophomores accomplishments and hopes they continue.

"It's obvious we are really excited for Kellie," he said. "This is the highest we've ever had someone ranked in the East Region and it was well earned with all the victories she had over some top teams. We are really looking forward to the spring and the opportunities that lie ahead for in playing more top quality opponents."

In doubles play Schmitt with partner Lynzee Kever also were ranked third in the East Region. The duo's No. 3 ranking in doubles makes the eight straight season with at least one Marshall doubles team ranking in the top 10 of region.
