State College, Pa. - After pulling out a long, grueling win Friday night over Penn State, 4-3, the No. 64 ranked Thundering Herd tennis team ended its stay in State College, Pa., with a 6-1 win over the St. John's Red Storm Saturday afternoon.
"We had another tough match with a short turn-a-round after a difficult match last night," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "I was proud of our team for bouncing back at the level that we did to get the win today."
Marshall improves to 8-1 on the year with the victory and St. John's drops to 2-2 on the season.
The Herd started out the match in its usual fashion by taking the doubles point against the Red Storm. The Herd is now 9-for-9 in winning the doubles point in its matches this season.
Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt continued their winning ways at No. 1 with an 8-4 win over Barbora Blahutiakova and Mariana Chachua. The Herd clinched the doubles win with the tandem of Jeanne Schwartz and Jessica Keener taking an 8-0 victory over Ashley Harper and Lauren Lorenzetti.
St. John's won at No. 2 with Alison Adamski and Nataly Tumsevica taking an 8-7 decision over Shannon Brown and Karolina Soor.
In singles play, the Herd won five of six matches to set the final score.
"I thought some of our players really responded well after yesterday and that's good to see," Mercer said.
For the Herd, Kever picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tumsevica at the No. 1 position. Schmitt rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chachua on court two, while Soor fought for a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10) win in a third set tiebreaker over Blahutiakova. Brown defeated Lorenzetti 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Keener cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 to close out the wins for Marshall.
St. John's lone singles win of the day was from the No. 5 position as Adamski knocked off Schwartz, 7-5, 6-3.
The Herd will head to the University of Virginia on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. battle between two ranked teams. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 70 and the Herd is No. 64.
