SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Marshall men's golf team finished its first spring tournament of 2006 with a 13th place finish out of 17 teams at the University of Texas-San Antonio Intercollegiate with a team total of 907 (309-299-299). Sophomore Jonathan Pepe (McKeesport, Pa.) led the Herd with an 11th-place, three-round total of 317 (76-71-70).
Baylor University claimed the team title by 14 strokes over second-place Louisiana-Monroe. The Bears finished with a total of 855 (290-283-282). The Bears' Ryan Baca won medalist honors with a three-round score of 199 (64-67-68), 11 strokes better than second-place finisher Matt Miller of Illinois State (68-70-72=210).
Junior Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) was next for the Herd, finishing with a score of 219 (71-71-77), which was good for a tie for 13th place. Other Marshall scores for the tournament were Matt Scytkowski (South Hadley, Mass.), who finished with a 234 (79-79-76, T-62), Chris Tipper (Parkersburg, W.Va.), who carded a 238 (83-78-77, T-77), and Brandon Katzeff (Uniontown, Pa.), who ended with a total of 240 (84-80-76, T-82).
Marshall returns to the course on March 4 and 5 at the Orange County Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The event is hosted by Xavier University.
