HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Mark Patton and Mark Dorris scored 14 points each to lead Marshall to a 62-57 win over Southern Miss Saturday.

Marshall's defense kept Southern Miss (8-19, 2-10 Conference USA) to just 37 percent shooting after the Golden Eagles shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half.

David Cornwell, Courtney Beasley and Jason Forte all scored 12 apiece for the Golden Eagles in the loss. Forte added eight rebounds

The Thundering Herd (11-14, 4-8) hit just eight second half field goals, but four came from the outside. Dorris led Marshall with four triples on the evening.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early, but used a 20-4 run over nine minutes of the first half to take a 22-10 lead with 8:30 remaining in the first half.

Patton scored a layup with 6:22 left in the first half to give him 1,000 point for his career. The layup was part of a 14-5 run that brought Marshall back within three. Southern Miss held a 31-27 lead at halftime.
