HUNTINGTON - After four consecutive weeks on the road, the Marshall Thundering Herd makes its home debut Wednesday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Akron at Dorothy Hicks Softball Field.
Last season, the Thundering Herd (9-9) won 13 of its 16 home contests, including its last three. Marshall is 7-4 all-time at home against Akron (6-5) and has won the last four meetings in Huntington.
Earlier this season, the Herd knocked off the Zips 2-1 at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. In its last game, Akron defeated Wright State 2-1 at the University of Louisville (Ky.) Invitational.
The Herd enters the midweek non-conference double-dip riding a two-game winning streak. Marshall defeated East Tennessee State and Austin Peay Saturday at the 14th annual Atlanta Marriott Buzz Classic in Marietta, Ga. The Herd dropped a pair of contests to host Georgia Tech and Connecticut Friday night.
Sophomore Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif./Diamond Bar) led the way offensively for the Herd, batting .583 with five home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.917 slugging percentage. For her efforts, Folden, who leads Conference USA in five offensive categories including home runs (eight) and RBI (23), was named C-USA Co-Hitter of the Week Monday.
Following its midweek doubleheader with Akron, the Marshall Thundering Herd travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., to open Conference USA play against Southern Miss. The three-game series begins Saturday with a 2 p.m. (EST) doubleheader, followed by a single game at 1 p.m. (EST) Sunday.
