HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Eastern Michigan Eagles held on to capture the 37th Annual Marshall Invitational Saturday afternoon at Guyan Golf and Country Club with a team total of 868 (294-285-289), ten strokes better than second-place Ball State, who finished at 878 (298-294-286). The Eagles' Peter Sauerbrei defeated Marshall junior Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) in a playoff to win medalist honors Saturday.
The Thundering Herd finished in third place with a final score of 880 (296-289-295), and Warren shot a final round 68 to finish at 213 (73-72-68) and force a playoff with Sauerbrei, who also fired a final-round 68. Saurbrei birdied number 10, the first playoff hole, to claim medalist honors over Warren. The second place finish was Warren's best in his three-year Marshall career.
Marshall also had a quality performance from freshman Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.) who tied for sixth with a 216 (72-71-73), his best finish as a collegian. Other Herd scorers were Trent Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.), who fired a 225 (75-73-77, T-41), Jonathan Pepe (McKeesport, Pa.), who scored a 226 (76-73-77, T-46), and Chris Tipper (Parkersburg, W.Va.), who totaled a 238 (78-80-80, T-81).
Matt Scytkowski (South Hadley, Mass.) led the Marshall individuals with a 221 (73-75-73), which tied for 22nd, while Brandon Katzeff (Uniontown, Pa.) ended the tournament at 222 (71-75-76, T-24), Andy Foster (Vinton, Va.) finished at 233 (75-78-80, T-76), and Jeremy Graham (Danville, Pa.) ended at 240 (75-81-84, 83).
Marshall returns to action next weekend at the Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio at the Muirfield Village Golf Club. The event is hosted by Ohio State University.
