HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's tennis head coach John Mercer has announced the addition of Yulia Kashelkina to the incoming freshman class. Kashelkina, a native of Moscow, Russia, joins Thaddea Lock to comprise the incoming recruiting class.
"We are very excited that Julia chose Marshall," Mercer said. "She is a very young and talented player who will only continue to improve as she grows and gains experience from playing in the United States. She has posted some impressive doubles results at a high international level and that will only help to improve our doubles lineup."
A Top 30 nationally-ranked junior in Russia for most of her career, Kashalkina has won four Russia national tournaments and notched runner-up finishes six times since 2002. In the 2006 Under-18 Championship of Russia, Kashelkina reached the round of 16 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles. She also has competed in the finals of several International Tennis Federation junior doubles tournaments.
Kashelkina also is an accomplished student, maintaining a 3.97 grade point average in high school. She competed in the English and German Language Olympics and the Physics and Chemistry Olympics in 2004-05.
The addition of Kashelkina adds even more depth to a talented Thundering Herd team in 2006-07. The Herd loses just one senior from the 2005-06 team that was ranked as high as No. 55 in the nation during the course of the season.
