LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville's Dustin Dawes scored in the 82nd minute to snap a 1-1 tie and lead the Cardinals to a 2-1 win over the Marshall men's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky.
"We played pretty well today," Marshall head coach Bob Gray said. "We just couldn't put the ball in the net. We had a lot of positives, especially playing against a strong Big East team. Obviously we still need to find ways to win these close games."
Kolby LaCrone (So., Zanesville, Ohio) scored the Marshall goal in the 10th minute on an assist from Michael MacDonald (Sr., Luton, England). The goal was LaCrone's first as a collegian, and it gave the Thundering Herd (1-1) an early 1-0 lead.
Louisville (1-1) countered just over five minutes later when Frank Jonke took a Gerard Voutier cross and scored past Marshall goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) to knot the score. The teams went scoreless for nearly 70 minutes before Dawes scored the game winner on assists from Steve Sloan and Jonke.
The Thundering Herd out-shot Louisville, 12-5, and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams had four shots on goal, with Terhune making two saves and Louisville goalkeeper David Simolike stopping three shots.
Marshall will compete in the Marriot Kingsgate Xavier Challenge next weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Herd takes on Western Illinois at 5 p.m. Friday, then matches up with DePaul at noon Sunday.
