Jersey City, N.J.- The Thundering Herd women's soccer team came away with a convincing 6-0 win over St. Peter's College today in Jersey City, N.J. The win gives Marshall a 2-0 start, the first time since the 2000 season.
"I am a lot happier with this outcome. Everyone played a complete 90 minutes and we were much more composed and effective in the box today then Friday," Head Coach Chris Kane said. "Today was an overall complete team performance. We still have work to do. Now, we will get back to Huntington and prepare for our matches against George Washington and Delaware."
Marshall opened up the scoring in the eighth minute of play when Ali Lizotte took a shot from 35 yards out and the ball carried through the St. Peter's defense to the back of the net. The goal marks Lizotte's first collegiate goal.
In the 34th minute Julia Axelsson carried the ball down the sideline beating two Peahen defenders before making a crossing pass. Erin Johnson was positioned directly in front of the goal and put the ball away. The goal and assist are the first of the season for both players. The goal is Johnson's fourth goal career goal at Marshall.
Axelsson added the third goal of the half unassisted in the 36th minute with a 25 yard bullet to the back of the net. The goal marks Axelsson's first collegiate goal.
The Peahens came close to scoring twice in the first half, both coming off of corner kicks. Goalkeeper Liz Orton made diving saves in both situations to keep Marshall's three-goal lead.
Marshall returned from halftime with more determination then before. The Herd dominated play from the beginning of the half.
Johnson scored the fourth goal of the game with a low, skipping shot from 10 yards out. She was unassisted.
The fifth goal of the match came from Molly Snead, unassisted as well.
In amazing fashion, Axelsson scored the sixth goal off of a corner kick taken by Johnson. Axelsson took one touch, a backwards heel flick, to squeeze the ball past the near post.
Marshall took 15 shots, eight corner kicks and committed 15 fouls. Orton made four saves before leaving the match in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Rachel Huff did not have to make any saves in the remainder of the match.
The Herd limited St. Peter's to six shots and four corner kicks. The Peahens committed 10 fouls.
Marshall opens play at home on Friday, Sept. 1 against George Washington at 7 p.m. during the Nike Invitational.
