BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University's Erica Short and her match-best 22 kills helped lead the Hoosiers (4-0) to a 3-0 (30-27, 31-29, 30-28) victory over the Marshall University Thundering Herd (1-4) Friday night.
The Herd was lead by its two returning outside hitters Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) and Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.) with 14 kills each. Senior setter Christin Bimberg (Schwerin, Germany) tallied a match-high 41 assists in the loss.
On defense the Herd was able to amass four players with at least two blocks. Chelsea Lazar (Palm Harbor, Fla.) led the Herd with four blocks and Uche Ndubisi (Indianapolis, Ind.) added two of her own, bringing her conference best to 25. Maggie Arias (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted double-digit digs in her fourth consecutive match and equaled a match-high with 10.
Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said he was more confident about the performance of the team after the match.
"Our effort level is where it needs to be," Jacobs said. "It's very encouraging to see the effort level we played with tonight. Finally we have all our players in the position they normally play."
Marshall was able to take the lead several times in each game and the Herd was even able to beat the Hoosiers to 20 points in all three games. However, the Hoosiers were able to rally for each game win.
"Indiana just played a great match tonight," Jacobs said.
The Herd will be back in action at the TIS Bookstore Invitational Saturday against Maryland at 10 a.m. and Chicago State at 4:30 p.m.
