AKRON, Ohio- Despite holding the Akron Zips to one shot in the first 45 minutes of play, the Marshall Thundering Herd women's soccer team fell 1-0 this afternoon at Lee Jackson Field in Akron, Ohio.
Marshall (2-3-1) controlled play in the first half out-shooting Akron 4-1. Erin Johnson and Kassie Hollman combined for five corner kicks giving the Herd opportunities early in the match.
Goalkeeper Liz Otron did not have to make a single save in the first 45 minutes, compared to Akron's Krystin Wilson who made one save.
The second half started tied at 0-0, but the Zips (5-0-0) changed that quickly. At 51:05 Christine Vacha gave Orton her first test of the match. Orton made the save and cleared the ball. Less then 30 seconds later Vacha made a breakaway run directly up the middle of the field and beat Orton for the eventual game-winning goal. Danielle Walsh assisted the goal.
The Herd's Julia Axelsson came close to sending the match into overtime in the 88th minute when she put a shot on goal as the offense collapsed into the Akron penalty box. Wilson was able to make the save from inside the Zip goal to preserve the win.
Akron's win extend their winning streak to five and has yet to allow an opponent to score this season.
Overall, Marshall tallied six shots, two on goal and earned six corner kicks. Meghan Wetzel led the team in shots with two. The Zips finished with a total of nine shots, five on goal and Wilson made two saves.
The Herd now has a 10 day break before returning to play on Sept. 20 at Sam Hood Field where they will take on Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
