CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team jumped out to a 4-0 first-half lead in rolling to a 6-0 win over Ohio Valley University Wednesday night at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston, W.Va. Dana Heimbecker (So., Niagara Falls, Ontario) led the offensive onslaught with a goal and two assists as five Thundering Herd players scored goals. The scoring output is Marshall's highest since Oct. 21, 2003, a nine-goal performance against Alderson-Broaddus.
Marshall (3-2-1) notched its first goal in the 10th minute as Osric Flores (So., Cascade, Wash.) scored on an assist from Shintaro Inagaki (Sr., Tokyo, Japan). Flores helped on the ensuing goal eight minutes later as he dished off to Michael MacDonald (Sr., Luton, England) to push the lead to 2-0.
Karim Boukhemis (Sr., Huntington, W.Va.) scored his team-best third goal of the season in the 29th minute on assists from Heimbecker and Clayton Cochrane (Sr., Morrisville, Pa.). Marshall scored its final goal in the 36th minute when a Herd shot ricocheted off an OVU defender and past goalkeeper William Bloom for an own goal.
Heimbecker increased the advantage to 5-0 in the 81st minute with an unassisted goal, and Inagaki wrapped up the scoring for the night with a goal in the 88th minute on another helper from Heimbecker.
Marshall's Greg Walter (So., Slippery Rock, Pa.) and Brad Kennedy (Jr., Lewisburg, W.Va.) each played a half at goalkeeper, with Kennedy posting the Herd's lone save of the night. The shutout is Marshall's third straight, as the Herd has not allowed a goal in the last 295:05 of game action.
Marshall leaves for the West Coast just a few hours after the conclusion of the Wednesday game. The Thundering Herd will compete in the Husky Fever Classic in Seattle over the weekend, battling Portland at 7:30 p.m. ET Friday, then matching up with No. 4 Washington at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
