SEATTLE, Wash. - The Marshall men's soccer team played No. 4 Washington tough but was unable to dent the scoreboard in a 2-0 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Husky Fever Classic at Husky Soccer Field in Seattle. Washington earned the tournament championship with a 2-0 mark.
"We played much better today," Marshall head coach Bob Gray said. "Washington is a very good side and No. 4 in the country for a good reason. We played them pretty even, but we had our chances too. This gives us something to build on heading into conference play."
Washington (7-0) took the lead in the 16th minute. After a JoJo Katz free kick, Raphael Cox ripped a shot from 25 yards out to beat Marshall goalkeeper Greg Walter (So., Slippery Rock, Pa.) and give UW a 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies added an insurance tally in the 35th minute when Kevin Forrest scored his ninth goal of the season on Katz's second assist of the match. Forrest earned Offensive MVP honors for the tournament.
Walter was solid in goal for the Herd (3-4-1), making a career-best seven saves. Camero Copps-Tilley earned the shutout for Washington while stopping five shots.
Washington out-shot Marshall, 18-9, and had a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Karim Boukhemis (Sr., Huntington, W.Va.) had two shots on goal for the Herd.
Marshall begins Conference USA play at 3 p.m. Saturday at UAB.
