EL PASO, Texas - The Marshall Thundering Herd extended its Conference USA winning streak to 14 straight games by defeating the UTEP Miners, 3-1 (30-23, 31-29, 28-30, 30-24) Friday night.

Marshall's Kelly-Anne Billingy and Stephanie Cahill each posted double-doubles. Cahill recorded her team-high sixth double-double with 17 kills and 21 digs. Scoring a match-high 31 kills, Billingy also produced 17 digs in the Herd's victory.

In the second game UTEP looked to even the contest by holding a 29-23 advantage going into the break. However, the Miners could not put away the Herd. With eight straight points, the Herd closed out the second game 31-29.

Cahill's seven digs and seven kills in game four helped ice the match. Marshall head coach Mitch said her play down the stretch was imperative.

"Steph had a tough night and really turned it on," he said. "She came up big for us in game four."

The Miners were able to get on the board with a game three win, but the Herd would not be deterred, closing out the decisive game four 30-24. Jacobs said UTEP but up a great fight.

"It looked like no one wanted to win this one," he said. "It was a great match. Everyone is going to give it their best shot against us all season."

As good as the Herd's offense proved to be, the defense also stepped up to take charge. Marshall was able to claim six players recording blocks and five players with seven or more digs. Jacobs said the Herd's potency came from its defensive play.

"They couldn't get the angle on us," he said. "Maggie Arias was automatic tonight and nothing was getting by her. Our strength was really our floor defense."

For 12th time of the season Arias posted double figure digs leading all players with 25. Chelsea Lazar owned the match-high in blocks with six and Uche Ndubisi posted five of her own. While leading with another career-high of 66 assists, Christin Bimberg also recorded five blocks.

The Herd will now head home for its next match on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. against the Tulane Green Wave at the Cam Henderson Center. The match will be televised live nationally on CSTV.
