HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- In the closing match of the second annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational, hosted by Marshall, Delaware defeated the Thundering Herd 5-0 today at Sam Hood Field.

"Hats off to Delaware, they came out and capitalize on our mistakes in every part of the field. We started flat, ended flat and every thing in between was flat. We will go back to basics and reevaluate what we do in between games. Maybe we aren't getting enough rest, or maybe we are getting too much," Head Coach Chris Kane said.

Delaware's (4-0) Melissa Kilker scored the Blue Hen's first goal when a Marshall (2-2) defender was unable to clear the ball cleanly from the goal line. The goal came in the 15th minute of play.

The Hens scored once more before halftime in the 27th minute when Lindsay James finshed a cross from Kendall Lytwynec.

"We were unable to rebound and find our energy after the two first goals. We were missing our spark today. I know we will bounce back from this and right it quickly," Kane said.

Heading into halftime, the Herd had out-shot Delaware seven to six and recorded three corner kicks. The Hens did not earn a corner kick in the first half.

In the 64th minute, freshman goalkeeper Liz Orton was given the hardest test of the match. Kilker ripped a shot from inside the 18 yard box, forcing Orton to make a dramatic diving save. The rebound landed right at Kilker's feet and she once again fired a shot point-blank at Orton. Orton came up big again making a huge save for the Herd. The third shot in less then 20 seconds crossed the goal line for goal number three. Kasie Shover scored the goal unassisted.

Delaware was awarded a free-kick outside of the 18-yard box in the 75th minute. Dana Rodgers took the kick and found Lindsay Boyd for the goal.

Lytwynec connected with Kilker for the fifth and final goal in the 89th minute.

When the final whistle sounded Orton had made 10 saves to Delaware keeper Bonnie Mills' four. The Hen's out-shot the Herd 14-5 in the second half for a total of 20-12.

The Herd travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. and Akron, Ohio for matches with Pittsburgh, Sept. 8, and Akron, Sept. 10.
