HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team is back in action at 3 p.m. Wednesday, taking on Cleveland State at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston, W.Va. The game previously was scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Wednesday in Huntington, but had to be moved because of poor field conditions at Sam Hood Field.
Marshall (1-2-1) went 0-1-1 last weekend at the Marriott Kingsgate Xavier Challenge in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Herd fell, 2-0, Friday to Western Illinois before playing DePaul to a scoreless tie Sunday. Despite going scoreless over the weekend, Marshall had several golden opportunities to cash in with goals but could not finish and find the back of the net.
Thundering Herd goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) earned his sixth career shutout in the tie Sunday. He stands sixth all-time at Marshall in career shutouts.
Cleveland State (2-1-1) is coming off its first loss of 2006, a tough 1-0 setback Sunday at home to Western Michigan. The Vikings already own wins over Robert Morris (4-0) and Canisius (3-1) as well as a scoreless tie with Pittsburgh.
Seven players have scored a goal this season for Cleveland State, while freshman Andrew Gutting leads the team with five points on a goal and three assists. The CSU defense has been stellar as well, yielding just two goals thus far. The Vikings are coached by Ali Kazemaini, who is in his first year at the helm of the CSU program.
Marshall and Cleveland State last met Sept. 11, 2005, in Cleveland, as the Herd posted a season high scoring output in a 5-3 victory. Five Marshall players recorded goals, with Osric Flores (So., Cascade, Wash.) notching the game winner in the 74th minute. Overall, Marshall holds a 5-1 edge in the series.
Marshall travels to Western Kentucky Sunday for a 3 p.m. ET match.
