LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Marshall Thundering Herd will be facing its toughest test of the young season when it visits the Kentucky Wildcats at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The 60th-ranked Herd comes into the match 2-0 after defeating both Eastern Michigan and Morehead State 7-0. Marshall will face a 2-0 Kentucky team that defeated Murray State and East Tennessee State by the same tally and is ranked No. 19 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings.
Marshall head coach John Mercer said it is a great opportunity to take on one of the nation's top programs.
"Kentucky is a great team and we are excited to get the opportunity to play them," he said. "Hopefully we can play well."
The all-time series lead belongs to the Wildcats with a 6-0 lead over the Herd.
In singles, Marshall will be led by No. 18 Kellie Schmitt and will likely face the Wildcats' 60th-ranked Joelle Schwenk. The Herd's 35th-ranked doubles team of Schmitt and Lynzee Kever will likely face the ITA's third-ranked duo in UK's Schwenk and Kim Coventry. The Kentucky pair was semifinalists in the fall season's National Indoor Championships and finished the fall season 9-1.
