WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Thundering Herd men's basketball team jumped out to a 42-25 halftime lead, but the homestanding Colonials rallied behind guard Maureece Rice's 23-point effort to come away with a 74-65 victory over Marshall Saturday at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C.
Marshall falls to 5-9 on the season, while the Colonials improve to 10-3.
It was all Thundering Herd early in the contest, as Marshall pushed out to an early lead behind hot shooting. MU led by as many as 21 midway through the period while shooting 41.2% from the floor and 53.8% from beyond the arc. The Herd had 12 assists against only five turnovers, and forced George Washington into nine first-half giveaways. MU's defense also forced the Colonials into some poor shots, and it showed in their percentages in the first half - GW made only 10-of-30 in the opening stanza and 1-of-6 from three.
The second half was a complete reversal from the first, as George Washington chipped away at the Marshall lead and finally took its first lead at the 9:09 mark, 51-50, on a Dokun Agingbade dunk. The Herd responded with a Taurean Marshall (Fort Washington, Md.) layup to make the score 52-51, but GW then went on a 13-2 run to put Marshall away. The Colonial lead grew to as many as 11 until settling with the winning margin of nine.
For the game, MU shot 32.8% from the field and 32.0% from three, while George Washington made 44.2% of its shots and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
Sophomore forward Markel Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.) led the way for Marshall with 20 points. Travis Aikens (Orlando, Fla.) added 12 points, and Tre Whitted (Wilmington, N.C.) knocked in 11 to close out MU's double-digit scorers.
Rice led George Washington with 23 points and ten rebounds. Rob Diggs added 15 points, and Aginbade chipped in 11 for the Colonials.
Marshall returns to Conference USA play when they travel to El Paso, Texas, for their second league game of the season against UTEP. Tip-off is 9:05 p.m. EST.
