Cincinnati- The Marshall swimming and diving team slipped to 0-2 Friday with a 79.5-42.5 loss to Xavier in its second dual-meet of the season. Despite the overall defeat, a pair of Herd swimmers turned in strong early season performances.
"We just came out flat," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "Xavier swam really well. That's what we expected them to do. We didn't swim well and that was unexpected."
Michaela Sceli earned individual honors for a second straight week. The senior won the 200-meter breaststroke at Miami last weekend and doubled up Friday with wins in both the 50 and 100-yard breaststroke.Sceli won the 50 breast in 30.27, more than a full second ahead of Xavier's Martha Cutter-Wilson, and then bested Cutter-Wilson by more that four seconds in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.48.
"Micky had some really decent times today," Kraus said. "She is looking strong now at the start of the season and hopefully she can keep that up."
Sophomore Kristin Wheatley is looking to carry over the success she had in her first season with the Herd when she was All-Conference USA performer in the individual medley. The Columbus, Ind. Native picked up her first victory of the season Friday in the 400-yard IM.
Kraus was disappointed with the overall team effort, but looks forward to seeing his squad bounce back Saturday as it continues its Ohio road swing with a meet at Ashland University at 1 p.m.
"We came out flat and they handed it to us,"Kraus said. "Hopefully we'll regroup and have a better meet tomorrow."
