Marshall Women's Soccer Settles for Tie against ECU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team settled for a 0-0 tie in double overtime against Conference USA foe the No. 14 Southeast Region East Carolina University, Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field.
The Herd improves to 3-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in C-USA, while the Pirates are 7-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action.
"ECU is a very good team and doesn't surprise opponents," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "I am very proud of our team for holding on and fighting till the end."
Marshall's forward Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.) led the Herd with three shots, two being placed on goal. The senior captain leads Marshall with 20 shots with 12 on goal.
Sophomore forward Julia Axelsson (Vaxjo, Sweden) tallied three shots with one on goal. Axelsson has recorded nine shots and five shots on goal overall.
The Herd's sophomore goalkeeper captain Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) registered six saves against the Pirates, which gives her 68 saves this season. Orton is 11 saves away from her career high of 79.
"This was a deserved and fair result," coach Kane added. "We now have to build off this draw and get ready for Rice."
Despite the tie, ECU took 15 shots compared to Marshall's 14. However, the Herd placed eight shots on goal with the Pirates only taking six.
Marshall will host Rice University and the University of Houston in the upcoming Parents Weekend festivities. The Herd and the Owls will match-up, Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Marshall and Houston close out Parents Weekend, Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Sam Hood Field.
