YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Marshall swimming and diving team split its Friday dual meet at Youngstown State, beating the Penguins 170-73 but falling to Wisconsin Green-Bay 132-111. The results move the Herd's season record to 2-3.
Marshall dominated in the stroke events, which have been its strength so far in the 2007-08 season. Lauren Goodwin, Kristin Wheatley and Ally Melinsky went one, two and three respectively in the 400-yard individual medley and Kayla Truswell, Wheatley, Samantha Noland and Goodwin took the top four spots in the 200-yard butterfly.
"It was tight race between us and Wisconsin Green-Bay all night," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "It was exactly what we thought it would be. We thought we would do well in the IM and breaststroke and the girls really dominated those events. It just wasn't enough."
Senior breaststroker Michaela Sceli tacked on another win to her season total, taking the 200-yard breast. Jenny Johnnson continues to perform well early in her Marshall career. The sophomore won the 1000-yard freestyle and finished second in 500-yard free.
Wisconsin-Green Bay's Shannon Demrow was a pain the Herd's side all night. The freshman won both the 500 and 200-yard freestyle events. Demrow recorded times of 5:08.09 and 1:55.72 respectively in the two distances and in both cases shut out would be winners for Marshall.
Marshall Junior Siobhan Schuurman led the Herd divers, finishing second-place in the three-meter dive with a score of 233.85 and third-place in the one-meter with 222.00 points.
"It's all about stepping up, and they did," Kraus said. "Their divers did well and ours really didn't do quite as well as expected. We did look pretty good on three meter.
"Tonight it seemed like they would pull away and then we'd smack them with one of our best events. We're also disappointed that we didn't win either one of our relays and that's something we've got to do.
Marshall will need to rebound quickly as it turns around for a meet in Pittsburgh on Saturday at Duquesne.
"We're looking forward to going at it tomorrow and looking forward to Duquesne," Kraus said. "I expect them to have the same kind of strengths that Wisconsin-Green Bay had today."
