ORLANDO, Fla. - The Marshall women's soccer team suffered its first Conference USA loss to the University of Central Florida in tonight's match-up at the UCF Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Herd goes 3-7-0 overall and 0-1 in conference while the Knights improved to 6-2-2 overall, 1-0 in conference.
"You can't put ourselves in a hole against a good team like this," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "They [the Herd] never stopped battling which is why I am very proud of them."
Senior midfielder Mollie Lee (Leawood, Kan.), senior midfielder Sara Burdick (Leicester, N.Y.) and freshman defender Emma Harrison (Christchurch, New Zealand) led the Herd with one shot on goal apiece.
The Knights continue to lead the series against the Herd, 3-0.
UCF's Ivonne George tallied the game's first goal in the 13th minute after two shots were blocked by the Herd. A rain delay of approximately one hour occurred after the first goal. The second goal was in the 35th minute from Sarah DeLeon off an Arielle Orr corner kick. The final first period goal came in the final minute with a Hanna Wilde 12 yard kick from a Danielle Dos Santos pass.
The final tallied goal occurred in the 65th minute by the Knight's Lauren Halbert from a Courtney Whidden pass.
"We have to take what we want because it won't be given to us," coach Kane added. "We have to keep the same intensity and effort and then good things will happen."
The Knights out shot the Herd 23-7, with 10 being placed on goal.
