HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Marshall University women's soccer team fell to host Southern Mississippi, 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Conference USA action.
With the loss, the Herd fell to 3-8 and 0-2 in C-USA, while Southern Miss improved to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
"The unforced errors were the problem in today's game," Marshall Head Coach Chris Kane said. "We have to shake it off and get ready for East Carolina; there is a lot of soccer left to play."
Marshall created 11 shots with five on goal during the contest. Ali Lizotte led the way with three, while Molly Snead and Missy Gordon trailed with two.
The lone goal for the Golden Eagles came in the 25th minute, after Sarah McFadden scored her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick. McFadden finished with eight shots, half on goal.
The Herd created chances to even the score, minutes after giving up the goal. The Herd received a corner kick that was sent in by forward Kassie Hollman. Hollman's crossed set up a Lizotte shot that was blocked by a Golden Eagle defender and created another shot opportunity for Snead, who couldn't get it past the Southern Miss goalkeeper.
Despite the first half goal, goalkeeper Liz Orton tallied nine saves and now has 62 on the season.
The Herd resumes conference play, Sunday Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. when it hosts East Carolina at Sam Hood Field.
