HUNTINGTON - The Thundering Herd close out a three game C-USA homestand this Saturday when it faces off against UAB in Henderson Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Marshall won Wednesday night at home against East Carolina, 56-52, in its last time out. The Thundering Herd held the lead for the most of the game, but the Pirates tied the game on two occasions in the final six minutes of the contest. Marshall had a counterpunch for each of the ECU runs and came away with the win to even its record on a season-long C-USA homestand.
Markel Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.), who leads the team in scoring and rebounding, paced the Marshall effort with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Mark Dorris (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the other Herd player in double figures with 12 points.
Defense was the name of the game for the Herd Wednesday, as it held the Pirates to 17 first-half points, the lowest for an opponent in the first half in the 25-year history of the Henderson Center. Marshall also held East Carolina to 28.8% shooting for the night. Marshall also combined for 10 blocks as a team vs. East Carolina, the first time the Herd had swatted that many shots in a game since February 25, 2003, when MU blocked ten Kent State shots.
Humphrey leads Marshall in scoring at 14.5 points per game (8th in C-USA) and also leads the team on the glass with 6.4 rebounds (5th in C-USA) per contest. Dorris is next for the Herd at 13.0 points per game, and senior forward Travis Aikens (Orlando, Fla.) averages 10.7 points per game. Marshall has had six different leading scorers in 2006-07 and nine different leading rebounders. Humphrey has led the team in scoring (7) and rebounding (9) the most times this season.
Marshall and UAB will meet for the fourth time Saturday evening, with the Blazers holding a 3-1 series advantage. UAB has won the last three games between the two schools, and is 2-0 all time in Henderson Center.
The Herd's lone win came on December 30, 2003, 68-66, in a non-conference game in Birmingham. UAB claimed an 81-78 win over MU on December 4, 2004, in another non-conference game, and the Blazers claimed both C-USA meetings in 2006.
UAB enters the game with an 11-10 record, and an identical 3-4 mark in Conference USA as the Thundering Herd. Paul Delaney III leads the Blazers with 16.5 points per game, with Wen Mukubu (14.1 ppg) and Lawrence Kinnard (12.9 ppg) each adding double-digitis. Former Indiana coach Mike Davis is in his 1st year with the Blazers.
The game can be heard live in the region on the ISP/Thundering Herd Network, and worldwide on the official site for Marshall Athletics, www.HerdZone.com. A live stream of the game is also available on www.HerdZone.com as a part of the Herd All-Access package.
