BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd women's tennis team returned to the winning track by defeating Davidson and Youngstown State on Sunday at the Huntington Tennis Club.

In the day's opening match with Davidson (3-2), Marshall (4-2) jumped out of the blocks early sweeping doubles play and taking the match's first point.

Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt took the No. 1 spot 8-1 with a win over Kim Whelan and Kelsey Linville. The second and third spots were decided by an 8-6 score with Yulia Kashelkina and Jessica Keener taking the win in the No. 2 spot over Teresa Wang and Virginia Berry. In the third it was Thaddea Lock and Karolina Soor claiming the victory over Michele Fanney and Lora Dushanova.

Schmitt continued her streak of singles victories intact with a straight-set 6-0, 6-0, victory over Linville. Competing at No. 2 for the second day in a row Karolina Soor won with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Clinching the match point at No. 5 was Lock who took the match in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-3) over Whelan.

The Herd won the match 4-3 and claimed its first victory over the Wildcats since the two schools were former rivals in the Southern Conference.

"It was good to have Davidson back in town," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We were excited to get the win and I'm sure Davidson will have a strong year ahead of them."

The day's second match featured the Herd taking a 7-0 win over Youngstown State (0-3).

Marshall started doubles play in a fury taking all three doubles victories. Kever and Schmitt won over Michelle Fulkey and Emily Thayer, 8-2 in the No. 1 position. At No. 2 Kashelkina and Keener won 8-1, against Nicole Haramlabopoulos and Gina Peretti. Finishing up play in doubles was the No. 3 team of Lock and Soor who shutout Kelly Culberston and Tanisha Welch, 8-0.

In singles play Schmitt stayed perfect for the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Peretti. With the win Schmitt pusher her singles record to 5-0 for the season.

The win by Schmitt was followed by an avalanche of Marshall victories as the Herd swept the remainder of singles matches.

"It was nice to comeback like we did against Youngstown," Mercer said. "We played with better shot selection and the way we were setting up points. It was nice to be able to finish out strong like we did."

Marshall's next matches will come on the road when the team takes on Pennsylvania on Friday at 3 p.m. and then Sunday at 1 p.m. against intrastate rival West Virginia.
