PHILADELPHIA - Marshall Thundering Herd sophomore Kellie Schmitt and freshman Thaddea Lock picked up wins in singles but those wins would not be to overcome the Pennsylvania Quakers.
Marshall (4-3) fell to its third ranked opponent of the season in its 5-2 loss against Penn (3-0). The Herd fell behind early losing the doubles point to the Quakers and struggled to gain traction in Levy Pavilion.
The doubles team of Karolina Soor and Lock won in the only doubles victory of the evening for the Herd. Soor and Lock remain undefeated on the season at 5-0 after picking up the 8-4 victory.
In singles Schmitt and Lock had no problems dispatching their opponents, both winning in straight sets. Schmitt won in the No. 1 position over Kate Ksminskaya, 6-2, 6-3, and in the No. 4 spot Lock downed Lenka Snajrdova, 6-3, 6-4.
The Herd will head back to the Mountain State for a 1 p.m. match Sunday against the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown. Sunday's match will be the 11th matchup between the two teams with Marshall leading the series 7-3.
