PINEHURST, N.C. - The Marshall women's golf team shot an opening-round 338 on Monday at the Pinehurst Challenge, the Thundering Herd's first event of the spring season, to sit in 16th place entering Tuesday's final round. Due to frost this morning at Pinehurst #8, only 18 holes were played, making the tournament a 36-hole event instead of the originally scheduled 54 holes.
Herd senior Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio) led Marshall with a 7-over 79 through the season's first 18 holes, good enough to place her in a five-way tie for 19th place. Churchill posted 12 pars on the day, fifth most in the tournament.
Freshman Larie Lynch (Huntington, W.Va.) had MU's next best round with an 85 (t-69th). Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.) shot an 86 while fellow seniors Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.) and Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.) both fired 88s.
East Carolina shot a 308 to lead the 17-team field after day one. Host College of Charleston is second with a 310, followed by N.C. State in third place (312).
