HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd women's soccer team will travel to Dover, Del., with a 2-0 exhibition record to kick off the 2007 regular season. Marshall will face the Hornets on Friday, August 31 at 6 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
Marshall returns 17 letterwinners and adds seven freshmen to this year's squad. The Herd's 2007 schedule consists of seven non-conference opponents and nine Conference USA foes.
"I am excited to begin the season," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "We had a good preseason and we hope to start off on the right foot."
The Thundering Herd returns Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio), a C-USA All-Freshman Team selection, to the roster. The Herd's midfield will be anchored by junior caption Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) with the front line anchored by senior captain Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.). Juniors Stephanie Kot (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Jessica Jennings (Dayton, Ohio) with sophomore Eileen Venchanos (Charlestown, R.I.) will secure Marshall's defense. Sophomores Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.), a first year captain, and Rachel Huff (Dillsburg, Pa.) will challenge for the number one spot between the pipes.
During the 2006 season, the Herd and Hornets met for the first time with Marshall coming away with a commanding 10-0 victory at Sam Hood Field. Seniors Hollman and Sara Burdick (Leicester, N.Y.) led the Herd in the shutout. Hollman tallied two goals with three assists while Burdick recorded two goals.
To close out preseason action, the Herd defeated Duquesne University, 1-0, last weekend and the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, 3-0, on August 19th.
