PINEHURST, N.C. - The Marshall University men's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the season with a 10th-place finish at the 13-team Mid-Pines Intercollegiate on Tuesday. East Carolina (842) won the event, played at the par-72, 6,528-yard Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club, seven strokes ahead of second-place Old Dominion.
Marshall sophomore Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.) was the Thundering Herd's high finisher, placing in a five-way tie for 13th place. The 2006-07 Conference USA Freshman of the Year fired a 1-under 71 in Monday's first round before adding a stroke each subsequent round.
Brand's 216 (71-72-73) was 15 strokes shy of medalist Eric Onesi (201) of Old Dominion. Onesi's teammate, John Murphy (208), placed second - with three of the next four finishers hailing from team champion East Carolina.
Marshall junior Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.) fired a 222 (77-71-74) for the week, followed by a 225 (76-75-74) by senior Trent Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.). Chris Tipper (Parkersburg, W.Va.) opened the tournament with a 3-under 69, MU's best round of the tournament, but the senior could not sustain the sub-par score in round two after shooting an 82.
Marshall's next event will come at the Eastern Kentucky Fall Classic from Sept. 21-22 in Richmond, Ky.
