High Point Defeats Marshall to Open the Herd Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team suffered a loss to non-conference opponent High Point University, 3-1, in Friday night's contest at Sam Hood Field. Tonight's match-up was the opening game of the third annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational.

With the loss, Marshall falls 2-3 while High Point improves to 1-2-2. Tonight's meeting between the Herd and the Panthers was the first in school history.

High Point's Alex Torriero put the Panthers on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute from an assist by teammate Amy Anzovino. The Panthers Leslie Long scored the second goal of the game in the 33rd minute. To open the second half, High Point's Laura Eldridge recorded the Panthers third goal in the 49th minute.

Marshall senior forward Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.) tallied the Herd's lone goal in the 62nd minute with a shot past the defense and goalie into an open net.

The Panthers out shot the Herd 19 to 9, with 12 being placed goal.

The Thundering Herd Nike Invitational will continue action on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 11:30 a.m. with Samford University facing High Point. Marshall will face the University of Kentucky at 2 p.m. on Sunday to close out the Thundering Herd Nike Invitational.
