Kentucky Edges Marshall in Double Overtime, 2-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team upset bid fell short to the No. 7 Great Lakes Region non-conference foe the University of Kentucky on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, in double overtime at Sam Hood Field to conclude the third annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational.
"This game was a heartbreaker," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "We had our chances to win."
Kentucky's Kate Hughes headed her second goal of the season with two seconds left in double overtime from teammate Julie Hull's direct kick to give the Wildcats the victory.
With the loss, the Herd fell to 2-4-0 while the Wildcats improve to 5-0-1.
"I am really proud of the way we played," Coach Kane added. "[Eileen] Venechanos stepped in for injured defender Meghan Wetzel and played very well."
Kentucky's Nicola Holdsworth gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with a cross from teammate Megan Jones in the 27th minute.
The Herd struck back in the 64th minute with a goal from senior forward Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.) off a defender's deflection. Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) assisted with a direct shot to Hollman. The Herd senior caption Hollman also tallied three shots placed on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) recorded 11 saves tying her with four other Marshall goalkeepers on the singles game list. She now enters the record books tied with with 11 saves in a single season game.
Freshmen forward, Erika Duncan (Eastkaven, Scotland, UK) recorded five shots, with three being placed on goal.
"[Erika] Duncan had her coming out party today," Coach Kane stated. "As a coaching staff, we struggled on her position, but after today we know."
Marshall will rest up and continue action on Friday, Sept. 21 against Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
