Herd Comes From Behind to Defeat Wright State, 3-2

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Women's Soccer (2-1) got the bounceback performance it needed Sunday evening with a 3-2 victory over Wright State (2-1-1) at Hoops Family Field.
MU fell behind early again following a 14th minute strike by the Raiders, but the Herd got the momentum shift it needed with a drawn penalty in the 39th minute by sophomore transfer Wiktoria Mikrut, one she would convert for her first goal for the green and white.

From there, the Herd added two more unanswered with second half headers from Maria Chaves and Geovanna Souza. A late penalty brought the visitors closer but Coach Rafa Simoes's side had done enough to see the game through.
"We came from a tough loss at High Point and we needed a bounceback, and the community showed up," Head Coach Simoes said. "We really appreciate Herd Nation showing up. [Wright State] had a beautiful goal and I felt we were good to finish the half 1-1. Then we were able to make some adjustments and open it up to 3-1."
"We now have two games in Tennessee coming up but really excited with how this group bounced back after a tough loss."
The 49th minute set piece goal for Chaves was the junior defender's first in her 26th appearance for Marshall. Captain Lea Misch provided the cross in for her first assist of 2026.
Fellow captain Madison Townes provided an assist of her own in the 80th minute. Her cross to Souza down the right side came moments after her crucial slide tackle on the other side of the pitch to prevent a potential game-tying chance for the visitors.

"It felt really good," said Townes. "Especially for me where I have been out for a while, I felt good and felt like myself. I think for the team it was nice that we still had energy and were not tired. It helped a lot where our backline was able to get up and down the field."

Marshall will start a two-game road trip at Belmont on Thursday, August 27 at 7:30 p.m. eastern, 6:30 p.m. Nashville time.
