VALPARAISO, Ind. - Marshall University senior libero Maggie Arias (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied a match-high 20 digs to become the Herd's all-time leader in that category, but the Herd fell 3-1 (28-30, 27-30, 30-22, 27-30) to Indiana University in Friday morning's non-conference volleyball match at the Valparaiso Popcorn Classic.
With the loss, the Herd loses its second straight match and falls to 5-5 overall, while
Arias, who has recorded 158 digs on the season and totaled 1,437 over her career, passed Bridget Repsher (1,428) who played for the Herd from 1991-1994.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Herd built a 21-13 lead in the third game and never let the Hoosiers get to within six points of its lead, and cruised to a 30-22 win.
In the fourth game, the teams fought to nine ties and two lead changes before the game was tied at 24-24. From there,
Junior middle hitter Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad) tallied five kills in the first frame and the two teams fought to 15 ties and four lead changes before the Hoosiers won the game 30-28 on two consecutive errors by the Herd.
Ross finished with a collegiate-career-high 16 kills in the match.
In the second game, the Hoosiers built a 20-15 lead before the Herd was able to pull to within one at 27-26, and again at 28-27. The Hoosiers used a kill by outside hitter Taylor Whittmer and a Herd error to post a 2-0 lead in the match.
Joining Ross with double-digit kills were senior outside hitters Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.), Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad), and middle hitter Uche Ndubisi (Indianapolis, Ind.) who tallied 10, 17 and 12 kills respectively.
