Men's Golf Cards Best Two Rounds of Season at Xavier Invitational

CINCINNATI - The Marshall University men's golf team got off to a fast start at the Xavier Invitational on Monday at Oasis Golf Club (par-72, 6,921 yards) by carding its best two team rounds of the fall season to finish the first 36 holes of the tournament in fifth place. The final 18 holes of the 20-team tournament will begin on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Marshall posted rounds of 284 and 287 on day one for a total of 571, one stroke behind fourth place Winthrop and 11 strokes off the pace of leader Eastern Kentucky (560). Marshall's previous best team round this season was a 296 at the Louisville's Cardinal Intercollegiate on Sept. 29.
The Thundering Herd stood in third place after the first 18 holes (4-under par) and played the second round at 1-under par to enter the clubhouse in fifth place (-5). At last year's Xavier Invitational, the Herd averaged a score of 292 each round.
Junior Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.) paces the Herd with a 141 (70-71), good for a tie for 18th place. Brand, who recorded two eagles on the day, finished in a tie for third place at the 2007 Xavier Invitational.
MU redshirt freshman Ryan Brookshire (Grapevine, Texas) shot a 2-under 70 in round one, with an eagle, before entering the clubhouse with a 3-over 75 following round two. Brookshire is in a tie for 35th place. Senior Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.) posted rounds of 72-70 (142) and is in a tie for 23rd place.
Freshman Bosten Miller (Charleston, W.Va.) and sophomore Bennett Boyer (Millersburg, Pa.) each tallied a round at or under par on day one. Miller registered a 1-under 71 in the second round while Boyer opened up his day with a 72.
Marquette's Mike Van Sickle leads the field with a 132 (64-68) with EKU's Jesse Massie and Toledo's Nathan Wine in a tie for second place (134).
