Volleyball Travels To UTEP And Tulane

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball team will take to the road for a pair of Conference USA weekend clashes beginning Friday, Oct. 17 at UTEP and concluding Sunday, Oct. 19 at Tulane. Friday's match will start at 9:00 p.m. ET, with first-serve slated for 2:00 p.m. ET, Sunday.

Marshall (9-8 overall, 2-5 C-USA) is fresh off a 3-0 sweep of Houston that snapped a four-match losing skid for the Thundering Herd. UTEP enters weekend play with a season record of 5-13, 1-4 in the league, and has lost each of its last four matches. Tulane stands at 14-5 overall, 5-1 in C-USA and has won 12 of its last 13 matches heading into weekend competition.

Marshall is 4-1 all-time against the Miners dating back to 1997. The Herd took a 3-1 decision in the last meeting between the teams in 2007. Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad) blasted eight kills, a solo block, and three assisted blocks in the win. The Herd owns a 2-1 series record against Tulane, including a 3-0 sweep of the Green Wave during the 2007 season. Ross collected six kills on 11 swings for a .364 hitting mark, and added two solo blocks and four assisted blocks in the winning effort.

Following a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Rice, Friday, Marshall responded by sweeping away Houston in Sunday's contest. Ross smashed a team-high 12 kills on 19 swings for a .579 hitting percentage, while Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn.) collected a team-best 10 digs and eight kills in the winning effort. Carlson also added a solo block, as Marshall out-blocked the Cougars 8.0-5.0 in the match. Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) assisted on four blocks, while Cameron Yoho (Sistersville, W.Va.) and Ross assisted on three blocks each. Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) added two assisted blocks, while Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) and Layne Kehl (Mountain Top, Pa.) picked up one apiece. Fleming guided the Herd offense with 33 assists in the win.

Ross continues to lead the team and C-USA with a .442 hitting percentage (175K, 31E, 31TA) which ranks her sixth in the nation. Sullivan leads the team with 180 kills and has also recorded 12 service aces. Fleming's 10.65 assists per set ranks her third in C-USA, and her 703 total assists ranks her fifth among C-USA setters. Carlson is the team leader and fourth in the conference in service aces (24), and ranks second on the squad with 174 digs. Jessica Dhoore (LaPorte, Ind.) has amassed 177 digs so far in 2008 to lead the team.

UTEP dropped a pair of decisions, 3-2 to SMU and 3-1 to Tulsa last weekend. Amy Sanders drilled a match-high 20 kills, while Aidan Mooney and Keisha Hyman-Gifth downed 12 kills each. Casey McCanelly added 11 in the losing effort. Sanders also added a team-best 21 digs, followed by KeAnne Langford's 18 digs. Marie-Therese Joyce and Jennifer Nolasco notched 12 and 10 digs respectively against the Mustangs, while Patty Jarmoc distributed 57 assists to guide the Miners offense.

In the Miner's 3-1 setback against Tulsa, McCanelly put down a match-best 18 kills and Sanders finished with 15 to lead the UTEP attack. The Miners received a team-high 22-dig effort from Langford, while Joyce registered 15 digs, and Sanders 10 digs. Jarmoc passed out a match-best 39 assists in the losing effort against the Golden Hurricane.

Sanders is the team leader in both kills and digs (217 kills and 191digs), while Jarmoc has passed out a team-best 623 assists on the season. Catherine Chavez follows Sanders with 198 kills and averages 3.54 kills per set. Tulane earned a 3-1 victory over Tulsa, Friday, and swept SMU Sunday, before dispatching New Orleans 3-0 in a midweek tilt, Tuesday. Sara Radosevic blasted a team-best 10 kills, while Bridget Wells added nine kills. Visnja Djurdjevic and Ksenija Vlaskovic contributed eight each in the winning effort. Jenn Miller totaled a team-high 11 digs, while Rachel Lindelow and Luna Rebrovic handed out 16 and 15 assists respectively against New Orleans. Wells collected a match-high 13 kills while Jen Linder added 10 kills against SMU. Radosevic and Vlaskovic blasted nine kills apiece. Radosevic also dug a match-high 13 balls, while Miller added nine digs. Rebrovic tallied 28 assists and Lindelow finished with 18 in the winning-effort against the Mustangs.

Radosevic has now totaled 250 kills to lead the Green Wave and has also collected a second-best 184 digs, while Miller leads the squad with 253 digs. Rebrovic has passed out 464 assists while Lindelow has handed out 287 helpers on the season.

Marshall returns to Huntington, W.Va. and C-USA action, Friday Oct. 24 for a 7:00 p.m. contest with SMU. The Herd then welcomes Tulsa to the Cam Henderson Center, Sunday, Oct. 26. First-serve is slated for 12:00 p.m.
