ORLANDO, Fla. - The Marshall University women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Conference USA foe and the No. 8 Southeast Region's the University of Central Florida, Friday evening at the UCF Soccer Complex. The Thundering Herd dropped to 3-4-4 overall, 1-2-0 in C-USA action, while the Knights improved to 7-3-1 overall, 2-1-0 in league play.

"It is difficult to win on the road," Marshall's interim head coach Kevin Long said. "However, as the reigning co-regular conference season champion, UCF has a great team filled with tremendous players."

Courtney Whidden put the Knights on the board first at the 23:25 mark from a Stacie Hubbard pass. The Herd's defense cleared it to Hubbard who then passed it to Whidden. The junior drilled her second goal of the season from the front of the net. Hubbard added one shot tonight.

UCF went ahead, 2-0, with a 3-on-1 rush as Danielle Dos Santos and Yvonne George passed it to Emily Maynard before closing the first half. Maynard notched her first goal of the season in the 31st minute to the top left of the net. Maynard also had four shots, one placed on goal in the victory. Dos Santos took two shots on goal.

UCF's Whidden tallied her third goal of the season to start the second half from a George pass at the 50:54 mark. She placed it in the net from five yards out. Whidden also finished with two shots on goal. George had three shots, with one on goal.

Amanda Martorana beat the Herd's keeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) to drill her third goal of the season into the far left corner of the net in the 76th minute. Brianna Schooley assisted in the finishing goal of the match. Martorana ended with three shots placed on goal.

Becca Thomas added four shots, with one goal, while Hanna Wilde had three shots, two placed on goal.

UCF continues its all-time series lead over Marshall, which dates back to 2005, 4-0.

"We had a sign of fatigue tonight, which is disappointing," Coach Long continued.

Sophomore Marisa Leconte (Greer, S.C.) led the Herd with three shots, one placed on goal.

Freshman Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky.) recorded her first shots of the season with two, one on goal.

Forwards Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) and Katie Ball (Louisville, Ky.) both tallied one shot. Duncan has 31shots so far this season.

Sophomore Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind.) notched two shots placed on goal. The midfielder has 23 shots so far in 10 matches.

The nation's 30th-ranked assists leader Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) added one shot tonight.

Co-captain Orton tallied seven saves, while UCF's Aline Reis and Lynzee Lee both had one. The Herd's freshman keeper Lauren Roberts (Rome, Ga.) notched her first save in her Marshall career.

The Knights outshot the Herd 24-to-9, with Marshall taking three on goal, while the Black and Gold took 12 shots on goal.

"We look for a weekend split Sunday against Southern Miss," Coach Long added. "I hope we can get back on the attack like I know we can."

The Herd will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to conclude its eight-match road trip against conference rival, Southern Miss, Sunday, with kick-off set for 2 p.m. (EST) at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles (5-5-1 overall, 1-2-0 in conference) and the Herd stand tied 2-2 in the all-time series, which dates back to 2002.
