HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University women's soccer senior Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Team honor as announced by CoSIDA, Thursday, Oct. 30. The Thundering Herd defender was one of 13 named to the District II first team.
"I am very honored to receive such a prestigious accolade," Johnson said. "It is nice to be recognized for my efforts off and on the field."
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. A student-athlete is not eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
Johnson is a pre-med major and holds a 3.86 cumulative grade point average. She plans to attend medical school after graduation.
Johnson is automatically placed on the national Academic All-America ballot, with voting beginning Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The third-year co-captain has an impressive resume throughout her years with the Herd. Johnson has 79 appearances, which puts her first on the program's all-time career matches played list. With 66 starts in her career, Johnson is tied for fifth with two other former Marshall players on the program's all-time matches started list.
Johnson has four shots, with three placed on goal in her 18 starts so far in 2008.
Off the field, Johnson has been selected to the 2006 and 2007 Conference USA All-Academic teams, two-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal (2006 and 2007), and named to the 2006 and 2007 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The All-District accolade is a first for Johnson.
"This honor shows Erin's leadership and what a tremendous student-athlete she is," Marshall's interim head coach Kevin Long added. "I was lucky to get the chance to coach her in her senior year."
