Women's Tennis to Close Season at Kitty Harrison Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team concludes its fall season at the fifth annual Kitty Harrison Invitational at the University of North Carolina campus. The Thundering Herd is set to begin all-day competition at 9 a.m., Friday with play concluding Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The annual invitational is in honor of former North Carolina's women's tennis coach, Kitty Harrison. She led the Tar Heels to four ACC Championships from 1977-1998.
"We will finish our season at a high quality tournament," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "There should be quite a few respectable matches this weekend."
Thirteen teams will be competing this weekend including North Carolina, Marshall, Duke, East Tennessee State, Maryland, College of Charleston, William & Mary, Georgia Tech, Furman, North Carolina-Greensboro, North Carolina State, and Winthrop.
Among the 13 teams there will be 18 nationally-ranked singles players and eight ranked doubles teams competing this weekend.
"Hopefully we can continue our progress and improve during and following this weekend," Coach Mercer added.
The 42nd-ranked senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) leads the Herd with an 8-4 singles record so far this fall. Sophomore Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) stands 7-5 in singles play this fall.
Senior Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.), sophomore transfer Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.), and freshman Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) all have a 6-4 singles record so far this fall.
Junior Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) has posted a 5-4 singles record, while junior transfer Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) enters the weekend 4-3 in fall singles play. Senior Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) has a 3-1 singles record.
The 14th-ranked senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor have posted a 4-3 record in fall action. Schmitt has an overall doubles record of 9-5, while Soor is 6-5. Raich stands 3-3, Keener is 4-3, Kellner 4-7, Koprcina is 3-5, Lock 4-3, and Bailey stands 5-2 in doubles play this fall.
