Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University Director of Athletics Bob Marcum announced today that Kevin Long has accepted the position of head coach for women's soccer. Long had served as interim-head coach for the Thundering Herd since July.

"It is a great opportunity to continue coaching at Marshall," Coach Long said. "I am excited and fortunate to be able to continue my coaching career here and with these players."

Long guided the Thundering Herd to a 5-10-4 overall record this season. Two of his student-athletes earned post-season honors from C-USA with freshman forward Angela DeSumma making the C-USA All-Freshman Team and senior defender Erin Johnson earning C-USA Academic Team honors.

"Kevin has brought the program along in a short period of time and we believe he is the right person for the job," Marcum said. "The decision to remove the interim from his title was an easy one and it is great to have him as our head coach."

Long came to Marshall from Rider University where he served as head coach from 2003-2008. He left Rider as the Bronc's winningest head coach with a 37-48-12 record in five years. He guided the Broncs to record-setting victories in his first two seasons, 2003 (11) and 2004 (12).

Prior to Rider, he served as the assistant women's soccer coach at North Carolina State University from 2001-2003.

Long began his career at Randolph-Macon Woman's college while also serving as the Director of Sports Information from 1997-2001.

In March 2008, he took an ODP 17-18 year-old elite women's squad to Russia to compete against teams from Poland, Russia and Ukraine. Long guided his team to defeat Russia twice and won its bracket to advance to the semifinal round. His squad took the Bronze Championship and was the second youngest squad in the championship's history to win its bracket.

Long began his career in the Arlington County Public Schools, Virginia, as a health and physical education teacher and soccer coach. After college, Long taught three years at Kenmore Middle School before moving to Yorktown High School (1992-1999).

Long earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from George Mason University (1993) and a Master of Arts in Human Services Administration in 2007 from Rider.
