Volleyball Set For Showdown With Southern Miss, Sunday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball squad concludes Conference USA weekend action, Sunday, Nov. 9 when it takes on Southern Miss. First-serve is slated for 12:00 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center and admission is free.
Marshall enters Sunday's contest fresh off a thrilling 3-2 victory over UCF, Friday, and stands at 11-13 overall, 4-10 in league action. Southern Miss is coming off a 3-1 victory over East Carolina and now has a 15-12 overall record, 5-9 in conference play. Marshall leads the all-time series 5-2.
Southern Miss took a 3-2 decision over the Thundering Herd earlier this season, led by Ashley Petrinec's match-high 16 kills. Marshall was led offensively by Elizabeth Herman (Dunwoody, Ga.) who had 14 kills in addition to a pair of solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad), Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn.) and Cameron Yoho (Sistersville, W.Va.) blasted 12, 11 and 10 kills respectively in the match. Carlson also tied for a match-high in digs (20) with the Golden Eagles' Maia Ivanova.
Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) guided the Herd attack with 54 assists, while adding seven kills and 12 digs. Jessica Dhoore (LaPorte, Ind.) totaled 11 digs, while Taylor Tanner (Union, Ky.) and Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) contributed 10 digs each in the losing effort.
Southern Miss received a 15-kill effort from Angela Hlavaty, while Sarah Jane Bowden and Lauren Sears chipped in 11 and 10 kills respectively. Kelsea Seymour propelled the Golden Eagles offense with a match-best 56 assists and added eight digs. Hlavaty and Petrinec finished with 10 digs apiece.
In that first meeting, the Herd out-blocked Southern Miss, 16-7, led by Ross' seven assisted blocks. Yoho added two solo stuffs and five assisted blocks, while Fleming also notched five solo blocks. Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed eight kills and a pair of assisted blocks in the loss.
In Marshall's win over UCF, Friday, the Herd snapped a five-match losing skid. Ross and Sullivan each downed 19 kills, while Ross added 11 total blocks (2 solo, 9 assisted) as Marshall out-blocked the UCF 13-6. Herman terminated 14 balls and Marcum smashed 12 kills to help spark the Herd offense. Carlson topped her previous best in digs (27), after recording a match-best 29 against the Knights. Marcum finished with 13 digs, while Fleming and Dhoore added 10 each. Fleming finished with a match-high 58 helpers.
In the Golden Eagles victory over the Pirates, Stevi Cherry drilled a match-best 17 kills while Hlavaty added 14. The Southern Miss defense was anchored by Ivanova's team-high 23 digs and Seymour's 10. Seymour also collected a match-high 40 assists.
Marshall concludes regular season action, Saturday, Nov. 15 with a match against East Carolina. Match-time is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Henderson Center and admission is free. Prior to the contest, the Herd will recognize its two seniors, Ross and Tanner.
