CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marshall University women's tennis team completed day two of play, Saturday at the fifth annual Kitty Harrison Invitational at the University of North Carolina campus. The Thundering Herd competed against Duke and East Tennessee State in singles and Winthrop and North Carolina in doubles competition at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center during all-day play.

The annual invitational is in honor of former North Carolina's women's tennis coach, Kitty Harrison. She led the Tar Heels to four ACC Championships from 1977-1998.

"We were close in a few big matches today, but unfortunately we couldn't finish," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said.

The 42nd-ranked senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) upset bid fell short to Duke's 17th-ranked Reka Zsilinszka, 5-7, 6-1 (10-6) at the number one mark. Playing the number three, junior transfer Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) fell to Duke's Melissa Mang, 6-3, 6-0.

At the number four, Duke's 119th-ranked Jessi Robinson defeated sophomore transfer Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.), 2-6, 6-3 (10-7). Sophomore Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) fell to East Tennessee State's Tara Byrne, 6-1, 6-1, at the five. East Tennessee State's Karina Kedzo defeated junior Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) in straight-sets at the number six position, 6-4, 6-0.

At the number one, the 14th-ranked senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor fell 8-6 to North Carolina's team of Shinann Featherston and Katrina Tsang. The pair of Austin Smith and Linzee Mabrey defeated the duo of Koprcina and Kellner at the two mark. The Herd's Bailey and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took an 8-2 decision over Laura Reichert and Meg Fanjoy at the number two position for the only doubles victory against the Tar Heels.

Bailey and Keener fell 8-4 to Winthrop's pair of Elizaveta Zaytseva and Patricia Coimbra at the one. Koprcina and Kellner took a 9-7 advantage over the team of Sandra Herrera and Lisa Wilkinson. Playing the number three, Lock and Raich defeated Sara Abutovic and Paula Pereira.

"We plan to get up and be ready to play in more tough matches tomorrow," Coach Mercer added.

Thirteen teams will be competing this weekend including North Carolina, Marshall, Duke, East Tennessee State, Maryland, College of Charleston, William & Mary, Georgia Tech, Furman, North Carolina-Greensboro, North Carolina State, and Winthrop.

Among the 13 teams there will be 18 nationally-ranked singles players and eight ranked doubles teams competing this weekend.
