Marshall Drops Invitational Finale to Evansville, 2-1

AUBURN, Ala. - The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team lost to Evansville, 2-1 in its Auburn University Tiger Invitational finale, Sunday morning at Jane B. Moore Field.
Marshall's (5-6) Autumn Mitchell picked up her first loss of the season without surrendering an earned run. Despite the loss, she maintains the lowest ERA on the team with a 1.52 mark.
Evansville's Jacki Bradley picked up her first win in the tournament going 4.2 innings for the Purple Aces.
Freshman Melanie Stoehr recorded her first home run of her collegiate career in the top of the second when she went yard on an Ashley Hobbs pitch. Junior Kristina Knecht and Deanna Tourville each added a hit a piece for the Herd.
The Herd's lead would last until the fourth, when the Purple Aces scored its two runs off a couple of Marshall errors. Evansville's Kristen Shirk singled to start the inning and advanced to third on a throwing error. She eventually scored on a Krista Price single. Evansville's Brittany Herald, who reached first base on the throwing error, scored on the Herd's second error of the inning, resulting in the game-winning run.
For her efforts throughout the tournament, Stoehr was named to the Tiger Invitational All-Tournament team, her first collegiate accolade. She finished the weekend going 4-for-13 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Junior Rachale Sofie led the Herd during the tournament as she went 7-for-15.
Marshall went 2-3 at the tournament dropping the opener to Gardner-Webb, 4-2. The Herd rebounded in Friday's action with a come-from-behind victory against McNeese State, 8-7. During Saturday's action, the Herd lost to host Auburn after defeating Furman, 11-3.
The Herd returns to action, Friday, Feb. 22 when it travels to San Diego, Calif., to participate in the University San Diego Tournament. Marshall opens play against Nevada at 9:30 p.m. (PT).
